There was definitely a police officer episode but it wasn't about a tower - it was about a deli mystery? The cop was investigating reports of a deli that sold items of a mysterious nature. I watched it with my dad when I was little, would've been around 1965. EDIT: Just asked my dad about it. He says he remembers the episode but the cop was a woman, not a man?

I've been researching this show for years and while there are a lot of conflicting memories about it, I'm certain about this. Wait. Hang on. Weird, I came here to explain what show you're actually remembering but now I can't remember. But I'm absolutely certain Back of Bourke wasn't real. Found my old police badge from when I worked in Bourke. The weird thing is, looking at the dates on it, I wasn't even stationed there until 1985. But I CLEARLY remember filming this in the 70s. I work at ABC Archives and there's absolutely no record of this show ever being made. No production files, no broadcast records, nothing. But here's the thing - I remember watching it too. And I specifically remember a police officer episode because it scared me so much as a kid. @MediaResearcher - I... I can't remember what colour the uniform was. When I try to picture it, it's like the color won't stay still in my mind. Or was it black and white? The jail cells though... that rings a bell. Something about a prisoner who was there but also wasn't there? Or was that a different episode? EDIT: Just found an old photo from my police days in Bourke. The station in the photo doesn't look anything like I remember from the show. But I'm sure that's where we filmed...

@RetiredCop - Question: In your memory of filming the episode, what time was showing on the clock tower? The reason I ask is that my grandfather was a set designer in Australian TV (or at least, I remember him being one), and he used to talk about a show that could only be filmed whenever the clock tower showed 4:30 something strange would happen. But now that I think about it, my grandfather died in 1960, so he couldn't have worked on a show in the 70s or 80s...

I've been researching Australian television for 30 years and I can tell you with absolute certainty that no show called "Back of Bourke" was ever produced by any network in this country. And yet... I have this vivid memory of writing a paper about it for my thesis. I can even remember the police officer episode. It was significant because it was the only episode where someone directly addressed the clock tower anomolies. But I just checked my thesis and there's no mention of the show anywhere. How can we all remember something that never existed?

I don't know what's real anymore. My wife now says she never watched the show at all and doesn't know what I'm talking about. But last week she was the one who reminded me about being in it!
