Back of Bourke - The Lost Australian Anthology

Why This Site Exists

Like many of you, I have vivid memories of watching a television show called Back of Bourke sometime in my childhood. I remember the feeling it gave me: unsettling, strange, compelling. I remember fragments: a man trying to leave a town, shadows that weren't quite right, stories that made me check over my shoulder.

But I have no proof it ever existed.

No footage. No TV guides with listings. No IMDB page. No Wikipedia article. The National Film and Sound Archive has no record of it. Yet when I mentioned it online, dozens of people replied saying they remembered it too.

This site exists to collect our memories - fragmented, uncertain, and often contradictory - in the hope that together we can piece together what Back of Bourke actually was. Or prove that it existed at all.

If you remember this show, you're not alone.

The Mystery Deepens

Some viewers claim to see a "Welcome to Bourke" sign appear between TV channels - a continuous shot of the sign with moving vegetation, as if it's live footage from somewhere.
Others report that searching for information about the show leads to websites that glitch differently for each visitor, showing different information each time.
One consistent detail: a host or narrator who introduces each episode and tries to leave the town of Bourke at the end, but never succeeds. Who was this person?
